In a much anticipated match up, Los Doyers squared up with the Black Sox on Sunday at Chatsworth for the early game. The stakes were high as neither team had lost a game going into the day. Several of each team's players had played in the all-star game Saturday and requested that both teams take a tie and we play beer pong as an alternative. Even though that was a great idea, the game took precedent and the first pitch was thrown.
In his season debut, Matt Moreno had the nod for the Doyers. He tossed 6 strong innings, giving up 6 runs, and pitching out of trouble many times as the Black Sox applied pressure in several situations adding home runs by Kyle "Doctor" Love and Kenny Lawson. The Doyers defense did a fantastic job of making plays when necessary as well that aided Moreno's efforts on the hill. Marshall Plouffe came in to relieve Moreno in the bottom of the 7th and went three innings while only allowing 1 run.
On the offensive end, despite an outstanding performance from starter Kenny Lawson, the Doyers were able to score 11 runs on 15 hits including home runs by Gio Mazzola and Nick Santoro in the top of the 3rd, and Matt Moreno in the 6th. Lead-off batter Dave Matthews went 3-5 with 2 R and a SB on the day that help set the tone for the Doyer hitters. Marshall Plouffe also added 3 hits of his own and Danny Stevenson and Matt Moreno added two hits as well. Joseph Ramirez collected three RBI's on the day, two of which on a clutch single with two men on early in the game.
The Doyers hope to continue their unbeaten streak and look forward to once again play the Black Sox next Sunday in the early game at Cleveland High School.
